Weekly Update: Content Schedule Readjustments & Proofreaders Wanted

Hello all!

Right off the bat, I want to apologize for the lack of updates. I’ve been battling a cold that has left me in bed for the most part. Given that I am a one-man operation, that means I fall behind with the schedule. Which happened. I am feeling much better now, and so the updates can recommence!

Content Schedule Readjustments

I want to talk about my content release schedule for everything — short stories, novels, novellas, the works.

For the short stories, I have been simultaneously posting them on Patreon and my website here on Mondays. Now that I have some stories out there, that will be changing. I will still be releasing the short stories on a weekly basis. You can view the full release schedule here.

I previously announced that Chains of Fate was moved from a Summer 2017 to a Fall 2017 release window and that is still in place. My aim is to release it no later than November 28 / 2017. If the novel is done earlier, I will release it earlier. There is a good chance of that happening because Chains of Fate is shorter than Darkness Rising. Unbreakable Will and Transcendent are still on track for Summer 2018 and 2019 respectively. I am very much committed to quarterly releases starting with Chains of Fate’s release, which leads me to—

I will be publishing a short story anthology in Spring 2018. This will be the complete, edited collection of the short stories that I have been releasing online, and will continue to do so leading up to the release of Chains of Fate. However, this will not be published in EBook form (however I do reserve the right to change my mind). This will be a paperback edition only.

So with all that said, my complete published release schedule looks like this:

  • Chains of Fate: Fall / early Winter 2017
  • Short Story Anthology #1: Spring 2018
  • Unbreakable Will: Summer 2019
  • Short Story Anthology #2: Fall 2019
  • Soon to be announced novella: Winter 2019
  • Short Story Anthology #3: Spring 2019
  • Transcendent: Summer 2019

I have tremendous plans for my fictional universe that exist well beyond Summer 2019. The main plot arc that I have been telling will end with Transcendent, and a new one will be born. How that will manifest, where it will be placed in the timeline, and who it will feature–these are all things that I will share leading up to 2019’s slab of releases.

Oh, and that soon to be announced novella that you see on the schedule? That might be indicative of where things are going after Transcendent!

Proofreaders Wanted

I am currently recruiting proofreaders for Chains of Fate. This is entirely volunteer work, but you will be given full credit and acknowledgment when the book launches.

So what am I looking for, exactly?

You do not need to be an English major or a book worm. You do need to be proficient in the English language to the point where you can identify spelling and grammatical errors. What I need are individuals who can read early passes of my manuscript and underline errors so that I can fix them.

If this interests you, please contact me.

The White Walls (short story) is now available!

Happy Monday everyone!

The White Walls (an Ancient Vestiges short story) is now available! You can find it and my other short stories (and planned) releases on my short stories page. If you enjoyed this entry, please consider supporting me on Patreon.

I will also have some Chains of Fate news at the end of the week (how the novel is set up, targeted page count, and a more concise release window).

Have a great week everyone and thanks for being a reader!

WBU: Darkness Rising (Second Edition) Releases May 18; In-Universe Patreon Short & Serial Story Campaign; Chains of Fate Release Window & Tease; Website Update

Hello everyone!

It’s been a very busy week. I have accomplished a lot for all of you. So let’s get into it.

The second edition of Darkness Rising is now complete and the manuscript has been submitted to my publisher. The novel will officially release on Thursday May 18 on all major Amazon marketplaces. The paperback will retail for $12.99 USD and the e-Book for $1.99 USD.

This second edition is my refined vision of the novel. It has been reformatted so it is much easier to hold, grammatical errors have been corrected, and some chapters were reduced of unnecessary clutter. I think you, the reader, will be very pleased with what I have put together.

***

Beginning next week, I will be launching my own Patreon page where I will publish, every Monday, a new short story or part of a set of serialized short stories based in my Ancient Vestiges fictional universe. These stories will jump up and down the timeline and allow me to develop events in more detail that the characters reflect upon or foreshadow in the future. None of these stories will spoil Darkness Rising or any upcoming novels. They will be companion stories, or independent of the plot lines explored in the novels.

Here are some potential plot lines I may explore:

  1. The formative years of the Southern Nations & Daniel’s and Damian’s friendship.
  2. A young Aerona Harkan growing up on her father’s dromond.
  3. The first summoning of Sariel to the realm.
  4. An account of the Trechtian invasion of Dalia.
  5. Tales from the time of Justine the Indomitable

And more!

These stories will be available through my Patreon page. Patreon is an incredible service that allows you to pledge however much money you want to support me and my writing efforts. When I produce a new paid story, you will be charged the amount you pledged. Any and all money I collect in this manner will be re-invested into the Ancient Vestiges franchise (marketing, promotion, and expanding the universe). I will post more details about how you can get involved this week.

On a more unfortunate note, I am officially moving the Chains of Fate release window from Summer 2017 to Fall 2017. The extra three months will allow me to produce the best possible novel.

Lastly, I do want to do a little tease for Chains of Fate. For readers who have been with me since I posted the first draft of Darkness Rising on Wattpad, you will recall that there was a massive dragon in the first go through of the prologue. The prologue that was published in Darkness Rising underwent significant changes — including removing the dragon, once referred to as the Arbiter of Time.

In Chains of Fate, there will be a dragon.

Will it be the Arbiter of Time, or another? Time will tell.

Oh, and a smuggler lord may just have to tangle with this monstrosity. I wonder if he can tangle with dragon fire?

As a final note, I will also be revamping this blog website substantially. Look for that next week!

Have a great weekend, all, and thank you for your support!

WBU: Darkness Rising 2nd Edition Price & Availability

Hello all!

The second edition of Darkness Rising is near completion, and will release on May 18, 2017. It will retail at $1.99 for the e-book and $13.99 for the paperback. The paperback has been radically reformatted from the first edition — shedding nearly 200 pages and $6.00 off the price. The word count still sits at 249,000 words, but the paperback will be much easier to hold. In addition to the reformat, both versions of the novel receives textual updates for grammatical errors. It is the definitive edition of the story, and there will be no further editions until box sets come out years down the road.

Have a great long weekend!

WBU: Chains of Fate Progress & Synopsis

Hello all!

I am pleased to reveal that the first draft of Daemon Lord — the first book of Chains of Fate — has been completed. This is more than merely passing a checkpoint a third of the way to the finish line. Daemon Lord is the largest book I have ever written, and perhaps ever will. It constitutes nearly half of the planned story for Chains of Fate.

Now that nearly half of the novel is complete, I feel very comfortable sharing changes that I made from Darkness Rising.

The number of character perspectives has been decreased.

There are four main perspectives in Chains of Fate: Aerona, Daniel, Tristifer, and Joshua. There are other characters who will have perspective chapters, but they will be interwoven with the above four. I wanted to focus very heavily on a smaller group of characters in order to make individual story lines stronger.

The narrator is much more personal.

I have made a much more concerted effort to focus on the minutiae of a characters experiences through the narrator. I have done this by describing how the character feels in the cold, rather than revealing it is cold; by interjecting more feelings and internal character dialogue in my dialogue heavy pieces; and by focusing more on the journey than simply placing characters at landmarks.

The chapters are substantively longer.

The word count for chapters in Darkness Rising ranged from 3,000 to 4,500 words. In Chains of Fate they average at 5,000 words. This may look like a substantive jump — it is less consequential than you might think — and it allows me to  reveal more about the characters and their journeys.

Now for a spoiler-free first synopsis for Chains of Fate. It is entirely dialogue from an existing character. I will not share who (though if you have read Darkness Rising you should be able to piece together who it is). Enjoy the first plot teaser!

“What good did it do? We sacrificed so much. I, I cannot sleep at night, knowing what I have done. The innocent, they come to me for guidance and wisdom. I smile down at them, give them meaningless coin, and assure them that all will be made whole.

“For seven years I lied to them; and now it all comes to pass.

“I know he is still out there, waiting. The elder told me that I should fear him — and I did. I took every advice and counsel, did I not? Still he lingers, waiting. He is almost here. He will not wait much longer.

“That man — he will lead legions against us. We heard about them as children, to scare us to obedience. Oh, but they are not stories. They are not fables. I saw them. In the dark. Through those eyes.

“I cannot look at those poor, piteous souls any longer and tell lies. I must lead them. I must stand up and fight against the encroaching dark.

“For if that door should open, the Calamity will be like a pebble in the great ocean, while he — that cursed daemon — will flood the realm in chaos and darkness.

“It is time to break the chains of servitude and forge our own fate. The Great Fate be cursed.”

Have a great week all!

Second Edition of Darkness Rising Coming in April; Chains of Fate Update

Hey all!

I am very pleased to announce that the second edition of Darkness Rising will be made available in April. For the e-book version the following changes have been made: textual updates (fixed grammatical & spelling errors and made slight word replacements). The paperback will have all the e-book changes and it will be reformatted (smaller font and wider margins). As of this writing, the page count has been decreased by 200. I will be able to offer Darkness Rising at a substantively reduced price tag than its current $19.99 USD. I will announce the final, much lower price when the manuscript is complete (I am currently going through the final pass).

When the update goes live, the Kindle app should download the updated text for e-book readers. For paperback readers, I will announce and link the second edition when it goes live to retailers.

Now for Chains of Fate.

I have written a third of Chains of Fate. I am very eager to show off some of my work so far, and I will shortly. The spoiler-free first synopsis — which is more of a teaser than anything else — will go up on Thursday night. If you are still working through Darkness Rising, the synopsis will not spoil any of the events of that novel.

Thanks for being a reader!

Three year book plan and Darkness Rising feedback

Hello everyone!

I would like to take some time to announce my three year book plan now that Darkness Rising has been published (and thank you to everyone who has purchased copies so far). I heartily appreciate all of the wonderful comments that you all have thrown my way about the work. Thank you. I also have noted your feedback, and I will comment on that towards the end of the blog post.

First I would like to talk about my three year book plan.

Darkness Rising was always meant to be a prequel or a book 0 of the Ancient Vestiges universe. It was meant to set up characters, countries, and the mythos for three lengthy books that would follow. Now that it is out, I have been hard at work at constructing the trilogy of novels. Today I am announcing the titles and release windows.

CHAINS OF FATE – Summer 2017

UNBREAKABLE WILL – Summer 2018

TRANSCENDENT – Summer 2019

These proceeding novels will follow the same format as Darkness Rising: they will be character perspective driven and have three distinct books or parts. For Chains of Fate, the individual books will be titled Daemon Lord, Godsbane, and Pantheon. I will be announcing the individual books for Unbreakable Will and Transcendent at a later date.

Now for feedback on Darkness Rising.

I have heard everyone loud and clear: the physical book for Darkness Rising is far too bulky. I will not be making any alteration to the book at this time, but starting with Chains of Fate, I will be decreasing the book’s physical dimensions, and lowering the font. This will make the book far lighter. In addition, when I re-issue Darkness Rising in later editions, it will follow this same format.

Thank you once again for your support. I will keep posting — and keep writing!
